As leaders know this shift runs deeper than that.

It impacts not only future access AND how our professions are valued n counseling, social work, education, and other care-based fields.

I’m putting together a simple leadership guide to help people talk about this with clarity. I know I'm not the only one who feels frustrated. Not only is it NOT TRUE its actively harmful.

Social work has been a professional, accredited, clinically rigorous field for over a century.
WE pass rigourous schooling, are supervised, board examined, licensed, regulated and trusted to diagnose Bill and treat independently. We are a woman-dominated profession that is one of the core pillars of mental health care.

This reclassification might not change licensure, reimbursement and recognition today, But that doesn't mean we ignore these changes.
Why? because language matters, and we know that perception shapes policy.

Let's not forget that historically, women-dominated fields are the first to be dismissed, downgraded, or minimized.

As leaders can’t afford to shrug this off, we have to advocate.

We owe our teams clarity.
We owe our own interns truth, not fear.
We owe our profession respect.

This is a story about trust and what happens when leaders stop micromanaging.

Recently, our children’s clinical lead came to me with a simple request: “We need a sensory wall in our kids’ space.”

My brain went to a large multifaceted piece for the wall, and she found this owl: a small, quirky, perfect piece.
I didn’t make her explain why, I didn't share my view, I simply said "Great!" and ordered it.

Because real leadership isn’t micromanaging. It’s trust.
She knows what our kids need.
She knows what works.
She’s the expert.
My job is to empower her, not interfere.

That owl? While our kids have a fun piece to play with, I see something else. It's a symbol of what happens when someone feels genuine ownership in their space. When they’re trusted to create, innovate, and lead from their expertise.

And clients FEEL that difference.

Healthy culture isn’t built through oversight. it’s built through empowerment. When your team feels like the space is also theirs, they show up differently. More invested. More confident. More themselves.

Insomnia is no joke, and I even tried some of the strategies I teach by clients and it was no good.

Summer break is fun in theory, But for so many people myself included it becomes this pressure-filled thing. Especially in the midwest where we get about 9 weeks of amazing weather. The pressure to make this time of year the most magical time can often leave us feeling defeated, let down, or just comparing our summer to everyone else's on socials. Give yourself permission to do whatever makes the most sense for you and your fam this summer.

May is the new December. You can't tell me otherwise. Here's what I've learned. Things will fall through the cracks, and not everything will go the way you wanted it to. And guess what? That's ok. Currently, my house looks like a tornado blew through it, and we are running on coffee and to-do lists. Instead of being really hard on myself about that, I'm just trying to remember things that need to get done well, and other things can slide. Give yourself grace and space to make it through!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and argue that Autism isn't the issue here, but rather ignorance and lack of understanding is. Neurodiversity isn't something to fear, it's to be understood, celebrated and respected! If the HHS secretary wanted to affect real change, he would push to fund the therapies, programs and teacher trainings that allow autistic people to thrive and grow, along with research that makes sense. He's not doing that, instead he's spreading misinformation and hurting people in the process.

Enough about HHS-I want to hear YOUR stories that celebrate the neurodivergent people in your life! Let's focus on what needs to be focused on, the people who deserve respect and dignity.

Most unhinged? "Don't you know babies can't go outside?!?" Mind you, it was June. At a park. From a random stranger. Ummmm thanks? The baby is ok, and I think they go outside? Not only was that random and rude, but as a new parent it made me think...omg I'm really bad at this. Truth is, I wasn't, that person was just out of line.

It's their job to whine, complain, and interrupt things because they are also learning how to be humans.

I dream of a day where I get to be a therapist in precedented times. All joking aside, the fact that certain people want to re-stigmatize mental health and convince people that their medications are dangerous is ridiculous. SSRIs save lives. And if you've been prescribed them by your provider, please continue to take your medication. You aren't weak or a bad person if your medication is helping you and your mental health. You're actually a pretty strong person to seek support and help. I see you, and I want to encourage you to keep fighting the good fight.

Here's the thing, if setting a resolution is your jam and makes you feel great- GO FOR IT! it's also ok to just keep working on whatever you were working on last year. It's perfectly NORMAL to wish for a calm, peaceful year. You can choose to make small changes, or frankly to make no changes at all, or decide August is your new year instead! It's truly up to you!

A gentle reminder as we head into the final holiday push-a few things we aren't going to carry mom guilt about:

1-we can say no. No to passing a baby around to a lot of people, no to jam packed schedules, no to what doesn't feel good to you and your fam. No can be a kind and full sentence.

2-Making traditions with your family, even if they are different from what you grew up with! It's your turn to make new and fun memories with your kids, and it's ok to change it up.

3-Letting go of high expectations. Maybe you had a plan to bake 3 dozen cookies, visit all the displays and sing carols while doing it, but December was short, kids were sick, or it just didn't go how you thought it would. It's ok to feel disappointed, and then enjoy what you did get to do!

4-feel relief that the Elf is on the way back to the North Pole...because IYKYK 😉

5- Holding boundaries with the people you need to, sticking to family schedules because it helps YOU, and making this holiday magical in ways that mean something to you, and not what social media says it has to be!

Before I had kids, I just knew we wouldn't have picky eaters, and I *definitely* wouldn't be making separate meals. Ummmm now? You want PB&J for thanksgiving dinner? You got it! Pepperoni Pizza? Let me throw that bad boy in the oven for you.

Why would I do that? Well, after a year or two of crabby starving kids, I began to ask myself, what am I wanting the day to be about? I realized I wanted a day that was fun for everyone, and one where we could hang out as a family with extended family. Once I realized my goal was quality time over turkey, I was able to shift my perspective. The goal is to be together. So yup, we ask the kids what they would like. One chose PB&J, the other, only side dishes. And it was still a great afternoon with our family.

I hope you are having a wonderful thanksgiving with friends, family and the people we choose as family today, no matter what you decide to eat (or not eat) today.

However the idea is the same... How can we play together today? So today it looks like Starbucks, a Target run and a skin care aisle in place of toys.

I could have been mad at myself that I didn't have the perfect winter gear ready to go today, but instead I gave myself grace that a pre Thanksgiving snowy day meant I hadn't gotten it all together yet. Were there the right size boots this morning? Absolutely not. But did my son have boots to wear so he could play outside? Good enough!

Trust me, I'm 100% on Team Coffee, but it's ok to reduce your intake and drink some water too, especially if you feel a little more anxious after you drink it. It's amazing all the ways our mental and physical health are combined!

When I was in grad school, I was taught that being a blank slate was the best approach, and that showing your personality wasn't helpful. However, since becoming a therapist, I've learned that simply being formal and distant doesn't always help!

Therapy can be as much about the relationship as it is about the work! Sometimes it's important to know your therapist hears you, reacts and shows they recognize how you are feeling, which can help you feel less alone!
