Today I got to do something a little different. I spoke at my church about forgiveness from a therapist's perspective. I love that my church believes mental health and faith belong in the same room. Therapists talk about this stuff in our offices every day, but there was something meaningful about bringing it into that space and reminding people that the clinical and the personal aren't that far apart.

As therapists, we always follow our clients' lead when it comes to faith. it's not something we bring to the table, as that wouldn't be healthy or ethical. But when it matters to our clients, it absolutely has a place in the work. Today was special for me because I got to be in a space where both were welcome at the same time.

Also it was a good reminder to me that therapists are humans first, and it's what i fully believe when it comes to building culture. Therapists are still doing their own work too. We're human first.

I'm grateful to be part of a community that sees therapy and faith as complementary, not competing.

Heard therapists shouldn't drink water in session anymore.
Cool cool cool.

But like...what about snacks or coffee? Kidding obviously, sort of...stay with me.

Here's what I know after running a group practice for 10 years:
Whether they've said it or not, your clinicians are already navigating this one and how it lands. Someone said something on socials and it's taken a life of its own, and now your team might be wondering if clients are coming in with opinions about what their therapist should be doing in their own session.

That's a weird position to be in.

As a group practice owner, your job is to make sure your clinicians know you're not buying into the noise either. And to remind them that you already trust them so they can trust themselves.

They went to grad school. They know when to encourage a client to hydrate, eat or even join with a client in that authentic moment. More importantly they know when to sit with someone in real pain and be fully present.

Back your people. Provide the snacks for your team and remind them to drink water.

Also the coconut wafers are elite and I regret nothing. 😉

I would never have let myself take this walk to school. Not because I couldn't, but because I would have felt the pressure to skip it.

I totally messed up with my team.

My personal life got a little messy (husband's health from an injury, my own child's needs), and work became secondary.

Slower responses. Missed follow through. A team left to fend for themselves

I just… disappeared a little.

I knew it as soon as it happened. I just told myself I was protecting them, I didn't want to bother my team, I wanted to keep a "good boundary" and besides, no one likes a leader full of excuses.

Spoiler: it wasn't protection. It was avoidance.
And believe me, my team felt it without knowing why or what happened, which is SO MUCH worse than just telling them.

So I sucked it up, took a breath and first spoke to my leadership team, and then spoke to my entire team.
I owned it. I apologized and explained that life got hard, but I should have clued them in, and moving forward I would. . Here's what's been going on. Here's what you can expect from me going forward. Then I just listened and let them tell me how it felt, where I missed things and how it impacted them.

I was doing everything for everyone. I would solve every problem before asking them to, I would say yes to everything. I tried to be the best hype girl you could find! I kept the back end of the practice a mystery.

I thought I was great and I called it servant leadership.

It wasn't.

Every year I say I will get here early. Do I make it? No. Does that mean I'm changing them in between sessions? Probably. Do I also ask myself every 6 months: do we really need this many clocks? Yes. Why am I like this??

Just out here making sure that our sessions actually run on time, and avoiding the awkward "wait, is that clock right?" question that will inevitably happen today.

But suddenly you’re 45 minutes deep into an insurance hold just to get a single claim processed for your team. It's not *exactly* how we envisioned it. Its definitely not the meaningful, clinical work we dreamed of doing when we got our licenses. It’s tedious, it’s unglamorous, and a time suck.

Pretty sure we started our practices because we wanted to do deep work and help people improve their lives. Turns out I'm not unmotivated. I just need this beautiful February day!

In all reality, seasonal affective disorder is real and so is winter fatigue. Even when you love your work, your life, your kids, your business. It's real.

Winter is a good reminder that some seasons aren't about pushing harder. They're about adjusting your expectations and giving yourself more grace. Especially on those cloudy heavier days (physically and emotionally).

If your energy has felt lower this winter, you're not broken, you're not unmotivated, and you're not losing your passion. You're just a human. And sometimes sunshine really does help.

Consider this your permission slip to stop interpreting winter as a character flaw. If it's sunny where you are, get outside and soak it up!!

When I was younger I figured that by the time I was in my big grown-up job leading my future practice, all I would want to listen to were "important" podcasts and audiobooks. I would be so serious and focused that I wouldn't have time for anything else!

Turns out one of the best leadership skills I learned was to still stay myself. To be authentic, to have fun, and lead well while doing it. Obviously there's a time and a place for learning and growing your skills, but it doesn't have to replace all the car jam sessions. Staying true to yourself let's you grow in leadership.

And I also know this is true.

Gratitude is not just about buying something.

I used to believe admitting a mistake as a leader would make me look weak.

Recently, there was a stretch where some things in my personal life were impacting how present I was at work.
Nothing super dramatic, or a crisis, Just human stuff that required most of my time and attention.

I didn’t want to burden my team.
I didn’t want it to sound like an excuse, that I was too busy.
So I said nothing and tried to do it all.

Guess what? That silence created distance.
My team felt the shift. They just didn’t have context for it, and it led to frustration.

So instead of staying quiet, I did something that felt scarier than pretending it would all just "fix itself" when I could be present.

I owned it.
I named it.
And I apologized.

Not from a place of shame.
From a place of leadership.

And you know what? It made the difference.
